The Pressure to Be Beautiful
Sometimes women blame men for a number of things. A common one, is that men put a lot of pressure on women to be thin and look beautiful and sexy. To look like fashion models.
I believe that that allegation, although not without grounds, is exagerated:
- Women do like to look sexy. But not necessarily to impress men. Actually, looking sexy is often a status symbol, to impress other women.
- The editors of fashion magazines, the ones who launch the new "looks" of super- thin models, are often women. The fashion magazines are mostly bought and read by women. (I do agree that many fashion designers are men, but then quite a few are gay).
- In a study about what people perceived to be the "ideal" body size, both men and women were asked to choose pictures of women, which they found more attractive. The women consistently chose the thinner ones.
- Typical men's magazines, like Playboy and Penthouse, often use models who are a little chunkier. Some nude pictures of Anna Nicole Smith (also a Guess model) in Playboy, were considered exceptionally sexy, despite her slightly higher than average weight.
Besides, men are not immune from the same pressures. Male CEO's of large, public corporations, all tend to have the same "look". And a study a few years ago, found that in the US military, men who were blonde and had square jaws, were much more likely to make it to the upper echelons of the hierarchy.
It is true however, that Paula Jones's credibility improved after she had her nose and her hair done. Only then did she obtain her out of court settlement from president Clinton.
Fashion and Modeling
Modeling is 10% about body and looks, 90% about attitude.
