Social Conservatives

Social conservatives concern me. They proclaim to be the moral guardians of the general population. Yet their definition of morals seems extremely narrow.

They claim they care about unborn babies. So they oppose abortion rights. But they rarely demonstrate much concern for babies that are actually born, especially for those born in poverty.

Social conservatives tend to oppose honest sex education, research seeking to prevent or cure sexually transmitted diseases and improved contraceptive methods. And they often hate gay people with a passion. Their definition of morals really seems to revolve around one thing only: sexual abstinence.

I am married and willing to agree that sex is best enjoyed as part of a committed relationship. Yet I cannot rationalize this urge to make it as risky as possible for anyone else.
