The Non-Trivial.com Philosophy

Non-Trivial.com is like a shopping mall for thoughts, ideas and opinions. That does not mean that we will publish just anything, though. The material we publish tends to follow a certain overall philosophy, which makes us unique.

Some may agree with this philosophy, some may disagree. Some may suspect us of hidden political agendas or affiliations. In reality, we are completely independent.

We believe what we believe, because we believe these beliefs make logical and societal sense. For the record, here is a short overview.

We believe in

  • People. Regardless of color, national origin or social status, all people are essentially similar in their needs, struggles and joys.
  • The Pursuit of Happiness. We are all on earth for a limited time. We are here to have fun, and to do good, so others can have fun too.
  • Personal Responsibility. Most people are smart and will eventually figure out what is best for them.
  • Science. We believe that the earth revolves around the sun and that dinosaurs roamed the Earth before humans did. We believe in Einstein's theory of relativity and in Darwin's theories of evolution.
  • The Constitution of the United States of America. This is a document of uncommon wisdom. This probably explains its longevity, as well as the success and greatness of the nation that was founded on its principles.
  • The General Spirit of the Constitution, which is to maximize individual freedom and ensure democracy through representation and through the assurance that the convictions of one group of people are not imposed upon another.
  • A Limited Government, run using sound, generally accepted principles of business administration, risk management and psychology. A limited government is consistent with a free society, where people are allowed to pursue the interests they choose, provided they do not harm others.
  • Economic Efficiency Limited resources are best utilized when everyone pays a fair price for them. Attempts to unnecessarily regulate an economy will always reduce its output. Bureaucracy is economically inefficient and an indication of bad management.
  • A Global Society Today, people can easily communicate and travel from one place to the other. They will always migrate to places where they feel best. Where they enjoy the most freedom and the lowest taxes. Nationalism had a place in history, but is probably a declining phenomenon.
  • Information. Information is valuable. More information is always better than less. The more advanced a society, the freer information is allowed to flow. And vice-versa.
  • The Unrestricted Flow of Ideas. Good ideas stand on their own, bad ones fail on their own. Censorship is a sign of distrust and insecurity of those in power. It is usually an indication of the imminent demise of the power imposing it.
  • Freedom of Religion. Religion can bring out the best in people. But it can also be abused to justify ignorance, intolerance and bigotry. Most religions understand this and condemn hypocrisy. Freedom of religion also means the freedom to disagree, or not to believe at all.
  • The Separation between Church and State. The ultimate role of religion is the same as that of government: to maximize the common good. Yet historically, religions have strayed from that goal due to excessive reliance on tradition and dogma. That is why all modern democracies separate religion and government.
  • Family Values. These have nothing to do with religious convictions or too much sex on TV. The only measure of someone's family values is how much of one's time one devotes to one's spouse and/or children.
  • Equal Rights, Unique Sensitivities. There are many similarities between men and women. Both are equally important and capable. There are also differences. Women have children; men do not. Men and women use different kinds of bathrooms. They also think differently, as a result of their unique hormone chemistry.
  • Sexual Freedom. We believe that sex is fun and healthy. Satisfying sex lives are essential to healthy lifestyles, solid marriages and a stable society. Repression of anything of a sexual nature is counterproductive and probably harmful.
