Diversity in Government
Some progress has been made as far as racial diversity. The next step is diversity of ideas.
Can anybody only imagine how boring this great country would be, if everybody where white, suburban and Christian?
Diversity in the work place
A (somewhat) fictional discussion between hiring managers at a high-tech company.
- We need to hire more minorities. This is coming from the top.
- I've dicovered a college that has mostly minorities. Let's go raid them before the competition does.
- What constitutes a minority anyway?
- We have a huge number of Asian-Americans. That should put us in great shape.
- Asian-Americans are not a minority.
- Why not?
- I believe they are doing too well. Their median income is higher than the US overall.
- How about Indian-Americans, from India?
- They are not a minority either.
- There are too many of them.
- Basically, a minority is defined as black or Hispanic.
- A woman is even better.
- How about Africans, I mean from Africa? We hired a guy from Africa, except he does not have US citizenship.
- Then he probably does not count as a minority.
- What defines Hispanic?
- Officially, it means having a Spanish surname, and roots in Central or South America. Maybe Spain too, but I am not sure.
- So, South-America is OK?
- I would think so.
- But in Latin America, part of the population is of European decent. They are white, they call themselves white and they are offended if you call them Hispanic.
- The South-Americans think that only the Central-Americans are Hispanics.
- Are they minorities?
- It depends, they could be if they want to be.
- There are some extremely wealthy Mexican students studying in Texas. Would they qualify as minority?
- They may, if they want to.
- How about native Americans?
- Don't know. You never run into them...
