Human rights: everybody has them, just by being human being. Civil rights: just by being American.

Remember the bumper stickers "Constitution, void where prohibited by law"?

Why are civil liberties important? Think about it this way. There are a lot of good, high paying, high-tech jobs in Singapore. And Singapore is a very nice place. Unfortunately, Singapore is heavily regulated. Chewing gum is against the law. There are plain clothes police officers watching you at all times. Engineers get job offers for more money than what they make in the US. But People don't want to work in Singapore. Liberty eventually benefits the economy.
